One of the oldest districts in Utrecht is also one the fastest growing in the city. On the west side of town you'll find a completely new residential neighbourhood called Leidsche Rijn. More than 2,000 years ago the Romans set up shop here and they were followed by the Vikings, which is evident in local archaeological digs. At first glance it seems that the area has little to offer tourists, but if you take the time to explore the region, with or without our handy tips and recommendations, you won't be disappointed. Make sure to visit the largest urban park in the Netherlands, Maxima Park, which is located in the heart of Leidsche Rijn connecting several housing estates. It's also interesting to note that it's a car-free zone enabling people to enjoy walking, cycling or skating without any traffic or exhaust fumes.
