On May 9, 1597 the Utrecht municipality gave permission to the linen weavers' guild to keep a linen market twice a year. Nowadays, the Lapjesmarkt at the Breedstraat is famous across the Dutch borders with it's weekly market. It's one of the few places where you can find all kinds of fabrics at the meter and exists already for over 400 years. Also all kinds of 'Haberdashery and much more is for sale. The fabrics market is held every Saturday morning from 08.00 - 13.00 hrs and is the largest and one of the oldest fabrics and textile market in the Netherlands.
