In 1348, the Teutonic Order built a monastery within the city walls. Over the centuries important international bigwigs stayed the night here, before King William I turned the monastery into a military hospital. In 1989 the military departed and squatters took possession of the building. It was then converted into the current five-star Hotel Karel V, an ideal place to have a drink and ponder its regal past.
