This snug Irish pub opposite the Mariinsky Theatre has a great atmosphere, 13 types of beer and seriously good food. Sometimes dancers from the Mariinsky come here incognito for a drink after their performances. In any case, the pleasant company of Russians and expats makes for an enjoyable and unpredictable evening. Come here for international sport events shown on three big screens, including English Premier football, American NFL, rugby and local sport favourites Zenit and SKA.

Shamrock is an institution in St Petersburg, only the original Mollie's has been around longer, before English and Irish style pubs were popular...now extremely popular with young locals who fill hundreds of them every night. It is homey, cozy and has a good staff, authentic acoustic Irish music live some night and probably the place with the widest range of social classes and types of any pub in the city. I do not remember a single visit dating back to the 1990s that did not result in a very interesting all night conversation with amazing strangers: a famous composer, a UK footballer, a couple ballerinas, a 20s something featured opera singer from the Mariisky, a UN official, a well traveled man who I later found out was a billionaire, a choreographer, and pro road rally racer....etc. Where else but in Shamrock would the person sitting next to you eager for conversation, be so interesting? On the negative side, sometimes the kitchen is slow and prices are about the highest in town but it is all worth the interesting meetings and social adventure.

Ten days in Russia and Shamrocks was my best experience. Some might think that is a foolish statement. But any time people that you don't know greet you with open arms and treat you like family, it's remarkable. I have spent the last 15 years of my life working, running and now owning bars in NY and SF and Tommy at Shamrocks in St. Petersburg was the best host I have ever had. If you find yourself in there and feel the need for a small taste of the kind of hospitality that we take for granted in the USA stop by and say HI. Have a shot of Honey Pepper Vodka and settle in for a day or two and tell Tommy, Colin and Yuri that Aces in SF sent you.

The Shamrock is the greatest hang out in St. Petersburg. It is partly owned by an American. It is a great place for a beer and have an excellent menu. Great before or after dinner hang out. Том Всего вам доброго
