Fans of Chekhov, Shakespeare, Ibsen and co. rejoice - the year 2019 is the Year of Theatre here in Russia! Just 300 years ago we didn’t build splendid theater buildings or create permanent theater troupes. Today, the situation could not be more different. Russia is now home to more than 600 theatres – historic and experimental, traditional and contemporary, musical and drama. Our theatres don’t only stage their own plays but also welcome artists from the other leading theatres
of the world and hold international theatre festivals.
In honor of the year Year of Theatre, a wide range of national and international theatre events will take place around all of Russia. Theatre lovers will be able to enjoy theatre olympics, a cultural event titled “Theatre for Children”, the all Russian theatre marathon that starts in Vladivostok and finishes in Kaliningrad, the 25th edition of the “Golden Mask” Festival, the 19th International Chekhov Theatre Festival, master classes, thematic forums, seminars, play premiers
and much more.
