Built on the site of Swedish fortifications there was a small palace that would later be turned into a fortress complete with towers and a drawbridge. Construction was completed in 1798, but Paul would only be able to enjoy his fortress for three years before his murder in 1801. Subsequently the fortress would serve as Russia's first school for the deaf and mute, an infirmary, various schools and municipal offices. Another restoration masterpiece following its destruction during World War II, the current fortress makes an imposing hill-top sight and works as a 5 Star hotel with restaurant.
