Podkarpackie or Subcarpathia in English is a culturally diverse and spectacular region, straddling the far southeast corner of Poland and bordering both Ukraine and Slovakia. It can be divided into various subregions: Bieszczady, The Low Beskids, Rzeszów and its surrounds, The Valley of the San and Vistula Rivers, as well as Roztocze.
Beautiful Bieszczady is buzzing. It was a magnet for many who sought refuge - artistic and political - during Communist times, and it continues to exert a pull for it is a hideout for Poland’s thriving artistic and creative milieu. In fact, the entire region still exudes an element of elusiveness. It is several hours drive from the big urban centres of the south, which means it retains its remoteness, and while most definitely on the radar of domestic tourists, it will certainly hold a lure for international visitors - particular those who like hiking. Bieszczady is at once mysterious, enigmatic and with lots to see and do.
It's easy to fall head over heels with the understated splendour of The Low Beskid region, a place that truly deserves the often overused accolade 'off the beaten track'. The rolling fertile hills and the ethnic minorities like the Lemko, and Boyko people that inhabit this sparsely populated and unforgettable landscape weave a wondrously unique cultural tapestry that enthrals visitors of all persuasions. Plus, it’s the only place in Poland I saw signs on the road for both wolves and bears. To say 'flourishing wildlife' seems to downplay the habitat’s diversity and it’s rightly considered a hiking haven for the more intrepid.
Then there’s the lush environs of The Valley of the San and Vistula Rivers and the canoeing adventures that await in these charmingly quiet and underdeveloped waterways. It really lends credence to the lines of the children's rhyme - merrily merrily, merrily, merrily, life is but a dream.
Roztocze almost feels like a place that time forgot. The forests, the lakes and the vegetation remain pristine. Any joyous tramp through the peace and serenity of this area is sure to leave indelible memories: here, hidden away is the very distillation of Podkarpackie tranquillity.
Finally, there is a turn towards a more urban reality and Rzeszów; this intriguing former Galician town and proud capital of Podkarpackie is clean, safe and bursting with greenery. It is also the beating heart of Poland’s cultural and historical heritage. There’s something for everyone in and around the town with museums, UNESCO-listed wooden churches, as well as bountiful castles and manor houses to overwhelm your senses.
Podkarpackie offers up an unparalleled range of eclectic delights. There really is something here to sate the adventure- and culture-curious alike. Visit today before everyone finds out.
