Hvar

What to see in Hvar?

share

The town of Hvar is like a three-dimensional picture-book of Mediterranean culture, with chapels, palaces and historic hotels standing watch over its timeless streets and piazzas. Luckily it is all very compact and easy to explore, with most of its attractions mere minutes away from Trg svetog Stjepana, an expansive main square dominated by the perfectly-proportioned elegance of St Stephen's Cathedral. Rising on either side are warren-like districts of huddled stone houses, leaning over narrow streets that invite endless wandering. To the north is Groda, a district squeezed between former town walls whose alleys are now lined with restaurants and bars. To the south, stretching above a busy quayside, is Burak, with its chic collection of cafés, galleries and boutiques. Despite their dainty size, many of Hvar's houses flaunt aristocratic airs, with family crests adorning stone doorways, and Venetian lions scowling at passers-by from their perches on ledges and window frames.

Sightseeing tip! Unified ticket costing 15 € includes entry to Fortica, Arsenal, Theatre and Loggia with clock tower.
