Like most Adriatic ports, Hvar has a mandrać: the protected inner harbour that provides secure anchorage for the smaller boats. Hvar's mandrač is distinctive because it's right next to the main square: one can imagine people arriving here and hopping straight out into the heart of the town. The stone wall at the square-facing side of the mandrać, adorned with pyramidal stone pinnacles, is a popular meeting point where locals and tourists alike will sit on the wall's inlaid bench to watch the world go by and engage in a gossip.
