Pakleni Islands
21 Jun 2024
A range of cult beaches and cult beach life lies just offshore on the Pakleni, the group of islands lying just opposite Hvar Town's harbour. The three biggest islands in the group - Jerolim, Marinkovac and Sveti Klement - all are served by taxi boat from Hvar's harbour, and are also popular with yachtists who have several marinas and anchorages at their disposal.
Jerolim was historically centre of Hvar's naturist scene and still attracts nudists every summer. They're a laid-back, welcoming bunch who don't mind interlopers providing they show a modicum of respect. (And if you're offended by nudists, it might be better to choose another island).
Marinkovac is famous as a DJ-powered clubbing location and is a popular bathing spot throughout the day.
Sveti Klement is the biggest of the islands, and makes a fascinating walking destination as well as beach-combers delight. Most boats head for Palmižana, a small settlement famous for the exotic gardens nurtured over the decades by the Meneghello family, who also operate a bungalow resort, restaurants and an art gallery. A bay with gorgeous beaches, is Mlini Beach on Ždrilca. Accessed by taxi boat from Hvar, it has several fantastic restaurants and is perfect for a day trip. The west of the island supports a small community of vine growers.
