Described as a place “where history takes on a new dimension,” the fantastic Treasury Museum of Međimurje lives up to its billing and then some. Created as part of the massive renovation project that revolutionised the Zrinski Castle in Čakovec, the museum is one of the most fascinating and engaging new developments in the country. The location is stunning, and the information provided throughout takes on new skin in the historic surroundings of the castle.
Life in Čakovec hasn’t always been so peaceful. The tumultuous history of the castle and its development is expertly outlined in the museum’s permanent exhibition titled “Centuries of Fortification.” As the name suggests, the exhibition tells the story of the castle from the very beginning, with particular attention given to law and order from the 16th century to the present day (by which we mean the strange reasons why people fell foul of the law. Some of the reasons might surprise you. Elsewhere, the exhibition dives into military campaigns and life in the castle over the centuries.
The “Miniatures” exhibition celebrates the oral traditions of Međimurje, from traditional crafts and customs to myths, stories, legends and folk tales. Heritage was transferred from generation to generation via storytelling and oral records, and it has never been more important to ensure the survival of these traditions.
Visitors heading to the museum at the beginning of 2025 will enjoy a special treat, as a fantastic exhibition on woolly mammoths will run until the end of March. The exhibition will present fossil findings of the famous beast while educating visitors on the region’s dynamic geological characteristics. You don’t need us to tell you that woolly mammoths were awesome, but a little extra information will only further reinforce that fact. There is plenty to love at the Treasury Museum of Međimurje, undoubtedly one of Croatia’s most fascinating new cultural settings.
