The most attended festival of its kind in Serbia, and formerly the biggest in Yugoslavia, the Niš Film Festival has always attracted a lot of attention. Organized in the open air amphitheatre of the fortress and along the river since 1966, every summer Niš has symbolically given the keys to the city to well-known actors. Richard Burton and the late Elizabeth Taylor were once the guests of honour, staying at the Hotel Ambassador.
