Set inside the Rossgarten Gate, this makes for a perfect stop if you’ve just visited the Amber Museum and Dohna Tower and although the place screams ‘tourist trap’ it is actually pretty good and reasonably priced. The setting is bare brick with handsome old furniture and waitstaff dressed like medieval wenches, while the menu is a mix of dishes which includes a strong fish section including, of course, Russian caviar. The Tsar’s soup featuring salmon, sturgeon and potatoes is a good way to start before choosing from yet another comprehensive menu of meat and fish dishes. There’s a smoker outside in the front garden where they prepare their own fish or alternatively, for a bit of peace and quiet away from the busy road, head out back to sit on the bridge that once linked the gate to the other side of the moat - quite possibly the most attractive place to eat in the inner city.
