Königsberg/Kaliningrad’s most famous son is unquestionably Immanual Kant (1724 – 1804) who is considered one of the greatest philosophers in history. Much of Kant’s Königsberg has disappeared forever, but his presence is still strongly felt in the city, not least on the historical island of Kneiphof, home to the cathedral and where the great Albertina university stood, which today has been renamed Kant Island. Much of the island remained derelict until the 1990s but huge investment from the local authorities have seen the island partially regenerated.
