tashas LXX brings a new touch of luxury to Sandhurst

04 Sep 2024
Located in the luxury shopping complex LXX Sandhurst, in one of Joburg’s most upmarket suburbs, tashas LXX is all about the luxe and lavish lifestyle that many Joburgers aspire to. Situated on the former campus of technology giant IBM, it stands in the middle of the bustling Rivonia Road. It’s a short walk from Discovery’s gleaming headquarters and padel courts, and faces Sandton City, perhaps the epicentre of Joburg’s "richest square mile".

tashas LXX exudes a warm and sophisticated charm that we have come to associate with the tashas brand. The dining area features neatly arranged tables replete with modern, comfy chairs with elegant lines that promise comfort and style, while lush greenery from large planters adds a refreshing touch of nature to this urban oasis. The colourful flowers and bountiful lemon displays add a splash of colour, inviting a happy mood. Soft lighting casts an intimate glow. The setting conjures a carefree island lifestyle, despite being in Joburg's busy north.

In addition to the classic tashas menu offering staples across the franchise, tashas LXX has its signature mains, desserts, and cocktails.

We were invited to the launch of this restaurant and had an early taste of what to expect.

The signature cocktail menu here is made up of creative concoctions. The Basil Crush is a refreshing twist on a mojito, while the Go Bananas promises a wild blend of banana liqueur and whiskey, a temptation for a less responsible evening. Other options include fynbos and spritz like no other instead of their usual Aperol spritz.

For starters, the beef carpaccio is a subtle option with flavours that aren't quite memorable. Still, the prawn gratin and crispy ginger calamari are the true stars, sparking food envy across the table.

For the mains on the signature menu, we tried the grilled line fish with prawns, served with a fresh salad of spring onion, cabbage, red onion, carrot, and baby potatoes. The crispy ginger calamari and the prawn gratin are meals you will remmeber. As with all tashas, there is something for every palate, and every dish is prepared with freshly sourced ingredients.

Dessert is a parade of temptations, with the coffee meringue standing out for its cloud-like sweetness, and the upside-down pear cake offering a comforting end to the meal. The Knickerbocker, while enjoyable, left us longing for the airy delight of the meringue and the comforting embrace of the pear cake.

The star of the show was the coffee meringue, we recommend it. Photo: Welcome Mandla Lishivha.

Founded in Johannesburg in 2005 by Natasha Sideris, tashas has grown to 16 locations in South Africa, six in Dubai, and one in London. Each venue is unique, inspired by a place or time, reflected in the menus and design. Tashas LXX, like all its eateries, is known for its attention to detail, from the spaces created to the food served and service offered.

The menu, developed with simplicity and inspired by the classics, offers familiar comfort and new experiences. The relaxed ambience, variety of dishes on menus and cocktail options make tashas LXX a great choice for an evening meal with friends, family, or colleagues.

The restaurant seats 160 and we are told that their top-performing dishes are the LXX burger and vodka rigatoni pasta; the Paloma cocktail is popular and so is the coffee meringue.

Whether you’re a regular or a first-time visitor, tashas LXX offers a consistent and delightful dining experience. And, however you choose to get there, Uber drops you off right at the entrance and there is ample parking in front of the restaurant.

The owner of this tashas, Siya Bhengu, shared his journey: “I started working in the industry in Grade 8 at the age of 16. When I was in Grade 10, I made a decision that I would stick to the industry after my matric as I did not have anyone to assist me with my tertiary studies. Here I am today, loving the industry outright!” Bhengu was co-owner of the tashas on William Nicol Drive [Now Winnie Mandela Drive] for the past six years before he branched out on his own with tashas LXX. He added, “My reward is having reached my goal of being a restaurant owner. Also, the joy I see on customers’ faces when they realise my growth makes me sleep beautifully at night.”
