Neighbourhood Spotlight: Houghton

With its ridges (or koppies as other people know them), sweeping views of the city and jacaranda-lined streets Houghton is as beautiful as the grand houses which occupy the neighbourhood. Perhaps most famous for being the suburb Nelson Mandela called home, a visit there not only allows you to peer into the looming mansions but also go for some light hiking at The Wilds, enjoy the sunset at Munro Drive and see some of South Africa's best art at Strauss & Co. Here's what we recommend checking out.

The Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory

Run by the Nelson Mandela Foundation, The Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory holds an archive of documents, images and other remnants from the life of South Africa's first democratic president. The archive shows the immense work Mandela did and the varied organisations and issues in which he was involved. The museum has been expertly curated to further the Nelson Mandela Foundation's goals of preserving memory and fostering dialogue and you are sure to leave with surprising insights into the life of one of our great leaders.

Sanctuary Mandela

Enjoy the luxury of a presidential suite at this boutique guest house. Located in Nelson Mandela's presidential home, this gorgeous hotel was rescued from disrepair in 2018. Many of the original features have been preserved and Sanctuary Mandela has worked hard to imbue Nelson Mandela's story into each guests stay.

The Wilds

For many years this magnificent park with stellar views lay neglected but, thanks to the efforts of artist James Delaney and his famous hound, Pablo, and a team of volunteers, it has now been returned to its former glory. Explore its winding paths, stop for a picnic or enjoy the panaromic views over Joburg. And for those of you with a fluffy hound, you will be pleased to know that it's dog-friendly.

Munro Drive

Driving up the luscious and snaking road to Munro Drive makes you feel a little like you're on a trip in Columbia. The views are well worth the steep gradient and hairpin turns, though we suggest you don't hop out alone as it is a known crime spot. You can enjoy it with peace of mind and a glass of bubbly on our Sunset Rooftop Experiences or on the CitySightseeing bus.

Houghton Golf Club

This 18-hole course is the only inner-city Jack Nicklaus Signature course in the world. Make sure you have your full club selection as the scattered dams and bunkers favour strategic play rather than power. If you're a birder, bring along your binoculars to see a range of water-loving fowl.

One of South Africa's leading fine art auctioneers Strauss & Co. do things a little differently with their focus on education and growing South Africa's art scene.
