Squeezed into a narrow vale right above Križna Luka's pebbly beach, Hvar's football ground enjoys the reputation of being one of the most dramatically-situated stretches of turf in the Adriatic - although you really need to see it from above if you want to appreciate its full impact. (If you search for pictures on the internet, most photographs of the ground have been taken by drone.) As recent World-Cup successes have demonstrated, the standard of sports schooling and football training is extraordinarily high in Croatia - and it all starts on small-town pitches like this one. The town football team currently plays in the Hvar island league. The club that enjoys mass support among locals is Hajduk Split; murals painted by their supporters crop up everywhere.
