Sport is pretty big news in the Tri-city with football the number one spectator sport. Football club Lechia Gdansk and Arka Gdynia both play in the country's top division, the wonderfully named Ekstraklasa, in modern stadia. Other sports which are reasonably well-attended are basketball and speedway though the fortunes of the clubs have been rather erratic over the last decade. Spectator numbers are on the increase with attempts to create a more family-orientated environment at each and a willingness by people to get out and support their local sides. Tickets remain relatively cheap compared to western Europe and there is always a vocal atmosphere.
