Pl. Wybickiego

Pl. Wybickiego, Gdańsk ,   Wrzeszcz         more than a year ago

It’s here you’ll find a three statues representing Grass and two of the heroes of his work. The first, Oskar Matzerath comes from The Tin Drum, an incredible work telling the story of a dwarf born in Langfuhr (Wrzeszcz) in the inter-war years who has a voice that can break glass and takes a view of the world from the beating of his small tin drum. The statue, unveiled in 2002, depicts Oskar who grew up in the surrounding streets sitting on a bench playing his tiny drum. The second statue stands atop a rough stone pillar in the middle of a fountain close by. The work shows a young girl cheerfully dancing while carrying an umbrella although we’re not certain if it depicts Jenny Brunies who is featured in Dog Years or Tulla Podkriefke who reappears in Crabwalk.
