History
The tradition of carillons in Gdańsk dates back to the 16th century. The first known instrument was installed in the Main Town Hall in 1561, followed by others in significant locations such as St. Catherine’s Church. Over the centuries, the bells have played a crucial role in the city’s life, marking time, celebrating important events, and providing a unique musical identity to Gdańsk.
Today, Gdańsk boasts three functioning carillons:
The Main Town Hall Carillon – A historic instrument, reconstructed after World War II, which plays automated melodies daily and is also used for live performances.
The St. Catherine’s Church Carillon – Poland’s largest carillon, consisting of 50 bells, regularly used for concerts and special occasions.
The Academy of Music Carillon – A modern instrument used for educational purposes, ensuring the tradition continues with new generations of musicians.
