It could be a prop from a James Bond movie. Do these huge, solid bronze doors lead to a criminal organisation's lair? The reality is much less spectacular. The doors of Eindhoven's iconic spaceship building were a gift to Philips from its employees on its 75th birthday. They were designed in 1966 to ‘symbolize the evolution of the human race under the influence of modern technology’. These mighty doors, which are nearly 3m tall and 2.5m wide, are covered in interesting scenes that include hunters and farmers as well as Icarus' unfortunate flight in Greek mythology. These surreal figures are surrounded by mathematical formulas by Einstein and other geniuses who, unlike us, could probably grasp the enigmatic meaning of these unusual doors.
