This city park is a big waste dump. This isn't a criticism. It’s actually a fact. Up until 1959, a factory was located here which turned coal into gas for the surrounding area. In the process a lot of tar and other waste products were released, but when the factory closed down, the city council decided to put a park on top of it to cover the pollution so it couldn't do any harm. This was done in a more imaginative way than the other parks in the city. Griftpark is the only park in Utrecht which offers a series of hills and an almost maze-like system of paths. The prospect hill offers a magnificent view of the park and the surrounding city and a basketball court, a football cage, a skating rink, a playground and a petting zoo are also at your disposal.
