A favourite of the international music press and justifiably so, Croatia’s prime rock festival takes places at a grassy waterside site at Lake Jarun on the southwest fringes of the city. It’s proximity to the capital gives it an intimate local feel that’s a bit different from other European festivals, although the number of international visitors is rising and the festival’s campsite – a lovely lakeside spot linked to the main festival grounds by pontoon bridge – is one of the best tent-pitching options on the European festival circuit. The gig programme kicks off at about 17:00 on each of the three days, with DJ tents raving on until the early hours. With this year’s headliners including the big-hitting trio of Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, Queens of the Stone Age and David Byrne, 2018 may well be a vintage year. The appearance of Nick Cave is particularly well-anticipated given the enormous critical success of his 2017 European arena tour. Whether he can recreate the same degree of spellbinding intimacy when out of doors remains to be seen – suffice to say that Cave’s presence on the bill will probably be enough to ensure a sell-out, so don’t leave it too late to get your tickets.
