Well, you know that hiking has gone mainstream when even young ones are getting in on the act. Croatia’s many hiking trails range from a Sunday stroll to seriously challenging, and there are plenty of options for families looking to explore nature together. These hikes are all child-accessible, just pack plenty of provisions and make sure you are wearing the right shoes.
St. Anthony Channel Trail
More of a promenade than an all-terrain train, this walk takes a couple of hours and covers around 4.5 kilometres not far from Šibenik. The walk follows the St. Anthony Channel for the most part, hugging the coast with plenty of places to stop and take in the scenery along the way. There is only one relatively challenging climb (64 m), but the kids will have more than enough energy to tackle that.
Kamačnik
Young hikers should have no problem tackling this gorgeous trail, one that follows the turquoise waters of the Kamačnik River and will have you filling up your camera roll in no time. The Kamačnik Canyon has been described as a “gorge full of wild romance,” and it is just the sort of adventure that will make young ones fall in love with exploring the world around them. The trail begins where the Kamačnik meets the Doba (there is a small restaurant for refreshments) and runs
for around 3 km.
7 Waterfalls Trail
As the name suggests, this engaging trail takes in seven spectacular waterfalls, making it arguably the most attractive walking route in Istria. Just think of the ground that covers. The trail itself can take an entire day (it covers around 16 km) and does get somewhat challenging in places, but there’s no reason why you can’t take young ones out on the road and see how you get on. The trail starts at Buzet, just 9km or so from Croatia’s border with Slovenia.
Stjepan Hauser Trail
There is a lot going on with this trail, so bear with us. First things first, it covers around 6.5 km (out and back) and is considered one of the most leisurely walks in Istria, perfect for slow strolling with loved ones of all ages. The trail incorporates beaches, herbs, shipwrecks, and more, which makes it pretty indicative of Istria on the whole. To cap off the curiosities, it is named after one-half of the beloved duo 2CELLOS. Why? Well, Hauser just so happens to be from Rakalj, the town where the trail is located.
Count’s Educational Trail
Count’s Educational Trail, is as much about embracing beauty as it is learning. The trail covers around 2.5 km and showcases many of the most beautiful parts of Jankovac Forest Park, with lakes, waterfalls, footbridges and more along the way. As the name suggests, the trail is dotted with educational boards, providing engaging context to the world around the walk.
