For those that do not know, Matija Gubec was a Croatian villager turned revolutionary who fought for the freedom of peasants in the 16th century. His name still lives on today as does a tree in the Zagorje area which was named after Gubec. Legend has it that he gathered his followers under this linden tree’s canopy before leading a revolt. The tree has been nominated for European Tree of the Year 2019 in the cause of highlighting the significance of old trees to our heritage. Located in Gornja Stubica, the protected tree is 9m tall and 4.9m wide!
