A Wrocław Institute of Technology graduate, architect Jadwiga Grabowska-Hawrylak is responsible for quite a chunk of the present-day city: working in the modernist style (a must during communist days), she co-designed the Kołłątaj, Grabowice, and Plac Grunwaldzki housing estates (the latter commonly called "Manhattan" or "toilet-seat buildings" by tounge-in-cheek locals), the Scientists' House with apartments for Institute of Technology staff, and the Christ the Savior Church on ul. Bałtycka.
