This summer, the Archdiocese Museum is putting on a special event to honor the memory of Father Jerzy Popieluszko, a priest of the Warsaw Archdiocese and staunch opponent of communism who was known for criticising the government in the 1980s and was killed by Special Police in 1984.

"The death of Father Jerzy shocked our entire homeland. The cruelty of the crime committed against the Catholic priest moved everyone, the public reaction forced the communist authorities to organize a sham trial of the perpetrators of the crime." The museum said in a statement on the event.

The event, entitled "TRUTH AND FREEDOM. KSIĄDZ JERZY POPIEŁUSZKO" began on June 6, the anniversary of the priest being declared a blessed martyr. It will bring documentary photographs, depicting the life of Father Jerzy and his activities, as well as the most important political events from the time of his activity. Also on display will be works of contemporary art on loan from many Polish museums and private collections. Also presented are documentary films with excerpts from the priest's homilies, recordings of witnesses to Father Jerzy's activities and friends collected by the Museum of Father Jerzy Popieluszko.
