Jan Wyżykowski, 'Bucza', 2022.
A series of 36 expressive works by Polish painter Jan Wyżykowski, created as a direct response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Clearly inspired by classic anti-war artworks, such as The Horrors of War by Jacques Callot and numerous works by Francisco Goya, their overtone is universal overall, showing the drama of the war, its victims and torturers. Wyżykowski's style favours simplified shapes, with the sharp and angular lines of masculine aggression contrasting with the soft, flowing lines using a bright color palette of an effeminate victim. The compositions in the pictures create various narrative sequences, show scenes and motifs directly related to the drama of war.
