The Chopin Piano Competition is the most important music event in Poland. It was initiated in 1927 and has been held every five years in Warsaw. The original idea behind the competition was the discovery of young talents from among students of Music Academies and secondary music schools, as well as the promotion of Chopin's music, performed without the commonly practised "embellishing" of his compositions. The repertoire consists of highly complicated Chopin compositions, demanding the greatest skill on the part of the participants. The most famous winners of the competition were Maurizio Pollini, Martha Argerich and Krystian Zimerman.
