Before there were lifestyle brands, there was Biedermeier. Based on the fusion of two poem titles, the Biedermeier era refers to a period specific to Central Europe in the first half of the 19th century marked by the end of the Napoleonic Wars in 1815 and the onset of the European Revolutions of 1848. The unique socio-political climate of this time—characterised by an increase in urbanisation, industrialisation, and newfound political stability—created a rise in the middle class and therefore a perfect audience for the arts. It also caused a shift in the overarching public discourse—writers, painters, and musicians opted to focus on "safe," non-political themes emphasising domesticity. As a result, interior decoration and furniture design emerged as significant domains of focus. On display are over 400 beautiful artefacts, among them pictures, furniture, glass, porcelain, jewellery, and other everyday trinkets used by the middle- to upper-class of this unique era.
