An immensely sombre spot in Sokolac, the Memorial Church of St. Petka is the final resting place of more than 1,000 Serbian soldiers, men and boys who lost their lives in the wars that ravaged this part of the world at the beginning of the 20th century. Some of the tombstones tell the tales of disastrously young men, sent off to fight at an age when most of us are dealing with first crushes and dreams of football stardom. The memorial church is a delightful piece of Serbian Orthodox architecture, a respectful construction in a most respectful setting.
