Sitting on the banks of the Volkhov river, the Yuryev monastery makes a nice and quick side excursion from visiting the Vitoslavitsy museum. This is a working monastery so you can’t visit all areas of it and it is advisable to dress conservatively. The central point of the monastery is the 11th Century St. Georgy cathedral, which is currently being restored and is due to come out of its scaffolding any day now. Inside the cathedral you can see some fragments of 11th Century frescoes. Just outside the walls of the cathedral and out of eye shot of the monks there’s a small beach and the whole area is very popular with local fishermen. To get there take bus number 7 or 7a. It takes about 20 minutes.
