Loggia

Rather like the cathedral facade, the town loggia with its seven arches is another of the town’s defining trademarks. From medieval times onwards this had an important social function, the place where locals met for a chat and municipal business was carried out. Owing its current appearance to a Renaissance-Baroque rebuild in the 17th century, it was attached to a governor’s palace, demolished to make way for the Prinzessin Elisabeth (now Palace Elisabeth) hotel in the late 19th century. The other remaining part of the governor’s palace is the clock tower or Leroj immediately next to the loggia - the tower can be scaled in summer for views over the harbour.
