Bosnia and Herzegovina is home to a vast number of excellent fortresses, but none are as fantastically preserved as the one that sits proudly above Srebrenik. Found 6km outside of town, the fortress also happens to be the oldest castle in the country, another accolade to place on its well-stocked shelf. The panoramas from this spot are tremendous, but it is the history and importance of the castle that ensures it remains a must-visit for anyone with an interest in Bosnia’s long and storied history. You’ll need private transport to get to the fortress, unless you fancy the hour-long (depending on your fitness) hike up to this medieval marvel.
