While the term ‘war train’ immediately reminds us of Black Sabbath albums and stoner movies, the reality of Bosnia’s modern history brings everything back down to earth. As the Yugoslav wars began in 1991, weapons improvisation was key. The Krajina Serbs started using a heavily armoured train, largely for transporting heavy weapons and providing rear support, most notably during the Siege of Bihać. One such train was ambushed and destroyed near Gradačac, where it remains as an all too real symbol and memorial to a painfully brutal war.
