Kępa Bazarowa is a nature reserve located across the Vistula River from Toruń's medieval old town. Spanning 71ha and a total 2.65 km of coastline, the reserve consists of a rare riparian forest with monumental specimens of poplars and willows.
Kępa Bazarowa (ENG: The Bazaar Woods) refers to it once being a meeting point for merchants on their way to cross over the river by boat to Toruń. At other times in history, this area was known as Małpi Gaj (ENG: Monkey Grove), a perjorative nickname that was earned thanks to the various unsavoury individuals that inhabited it - thieves, non-guild-associated craftsmen, prostitutes, and the like. This area was finally connected to the opposite city-side shore with a wooden bridge in the year 1500. The stepping off point of the bridge, which is now gone, is the location of the Vistula River viewing platform.
From the Old Town, Kępa Bazarowa can be reached by “Katarzynka” - a small boat departing from the docks on Philadelphia Boulevard and arriving at Kępa Bazarowa near the Vistula River viewing platform.
