Damascus Citadel

The formidable medieval fortress at the northwest corner of the Old City differs from most Syrian castles by being built on flat ground rather than a hilltop. Most of the current structure dates back to the Ayyubid and Mamluk periods, featuring massive defensive walls, twelve towers, and a deep moat. It has served various roles throughout history, from a royal residence to a military barracks and even a prison. It has unfortunately not been open to visitors for several years due to renovations, but a walk around the northern wall is impressive enough.
