There was once a time when a town was only as safe as its fortress. These magnificent fortifications are dotted all around the region. While many of them lie in ruins, and their modern value is more significant in symbolism and tourism, it is undeniable that these fortresses helped make Croatia and its neighbours what they are today.
Night of the Fortresses is an annual event that showcases the majesty of these spots, and the 2025 edition brings a special flavour that catapults history into the modern world.
In 2025, Night of the Fortresses Goes Green. The cultural heritage of the fortresses will be allied to environmental responsibility and education, with the aim of opening the eyes of visitors to the value and importance of sustainable tourism and all the rest. The following Croatian fortresses will take part in the program: Kula Revelin (Korčula), Trakošćan Castle, Stari Grad Dubovac (Karlovac), Frankopan Castle (Grobnik), Kaštel, Fort Bourguignon, Casoni Vecchi (all Pula), St Nicholas Fortress, St John’s Fortress, Barone, St Michael’s Fortress (all Šibenik), Fort Imperial (Dubrovnik), and Nehaj Fortress (Senj), along with visitor’s centres and city museums in Omiš, Slunj, and more. The fun takes place on May 9.
