The Zuiderpark measures 10 hectares in size and was created in 1958. For many locals it's the coolest patch of green in the city centre. The northern part of Zuiderpark is occupied by the city’s historic ramparts, while the southern part is a kind of meeting place with a central meadow perfect for strolling. Eight tennis courts are available as well as a rugby field next door and a small skate park. The park was embellished with bridges, benches, trees and new pavements during renovations in the 1990s, not to mention nine evenly finished, anthracite-coloured columns. One of the entrances is adorned with curved, stainless steel masts topped with weather vanes. The landscape is also dotted with bizarre abstract statues created from the remnants of a destroyed bridge.
