One of the best-preserved examples of the so-called "Ottoman-style" synagogues; the interior is a hidden treasure and burst of colour. An exquisite Venetian glass chandelier hangs from centrally from the ceiling, which has a richly painted dome. All surfaces are covered in elaborate, Moorish-style, geometric designs in once-bright greens and blues. Torah scrolls are kept in the gilded Aron-ha-Kodesh.
In 1998 to mark the 55th anniversary of the Rescue of the Bulgarian Jews, memorial stones with the names of Patriarch Kiril and Member of Parliament Dimitar Peshev were placed in the synagogue and perhaps the world’s only Monument of Gratitude was erected in the nearby square. The monument is in the shape of a ritual horn – shofar, used in Saturday services and bears an inscription in Bulgarian, Hebrew and English. The monument is by the sculptor Atanas Karadechev from Plovdiv.
