Commonly known as 'Alyosha', the monument to the Unknown Soviet Soldier commemorates the arrival of the Soviet troops that marked the end of WWII. 'Alyosha' is short for Alexei, the Soviet soldier whose photo served as the model for the statue. Standing at fifteen metres tall on top of the Liberator's Hill, Alyosha is visible from every point in the city. A winding path leads up the statue.
