Fifteen kilometres north of Struga at the foot of the Jablanica mountain range, the village of Vevčani sits at an altitude of almost one kilometre and is more than worth a visit if you’re in the area. Famed for its many springs and caves and the impressive glacial lakes that lie above it, find a couple of small restaurants in the centre if you’re hungry where as well as having something to eat you can catch up with the latest village news from one of the locals. If you’re in North Macedonia on January 13, try to make it along to the annual Vevčani Carnival when the locals parade the streets in masks in a celebration of the old New Year.
