One of Moscow's oldest parks is named after the falcon hunts conducted by the Tsars (a sokol is a falcon). Today it's a popular ice-skating venue in winter and the home of Moscow's only year round ice museum. The park grounds stretch on for kilometers and hide many delights such as small petting zoos, formal rose gardens and excellent shashlik restaurants. The park’s layout is very convenient for visitors: the Main Entrance alley leads to the Big Ring which radiates eight alleys traversed by a cross alley. Thus nine sectors are formed featuring various pavilions and stages. Each sector is planted with trees of one species. Today the first and third alleys are planted with birches, the fourth with lime-trees and maples, the second with lime-trees, the fifth with ash-trees, the sixth with red oaks, and the May Alley with larches. A real delight for botanists!
