Hidden underneath the centre of Maribor we find an oenophile’s wonderland. First established in the mid 19th century, the Vinag wine cellar stretches some 2,5km underground, covers 20,000m² and is full of all manner of wine history. Wooden barrels and concrete tanks are everywhere you look. It is the wine archives that take this particular cake though, with the oldest bottle coming from 1946 (everything earlier was drank in the war). Wine tours and tastings are obviously available, and highly recommended. Concerts are also held here, and once you experience the acoustics of the biggest classical city centre wine cellar in Europe you’ll be queuing up to attend.
