As Slovenia’s overall restaurant scene has increased in terms of quality and diversity over the years, so has Maribor’s. No longer do vegetarians find themselves on the hunt for something suitable to eat, with there now being several vegetarian and vegan friendly restaurants in Maribor’s city centre. Meat-eaters, however, still face the problem of trying to figure out how to squeeze in a second lunch and still have enough room left for dinner. More and more trendy international places have sprung up across Maribor and its surroundings, making it easier for one to find something gourmet to eat. And due to Maribor’s geography and industrial past, it should come as no surprise that Balkan and Central European food still remain a firm fixture. For those willing and able to travel beyond the centre of town there are quite a few good family-run places to be found scattered throughout the surrounding countryside, which not only serve up tasty traditional cuisine and copious amounts of local wine, but also provide a memorable experience.
