In the autumn of 2019, the Slovene National Theatre in Maribor celebrated 100 years since the first staging of Tugomer, the first Slovene tragedy written by Josip Jurčič. That's kind of a big deal since the whole idea for a distinguished nation of the Slovenes started of by using an own language and making sure it has its place in the world's stage. Local and foreign born, bred and hosted theatre productions are joined with an opera and ballet program throughout the year, inviting audiences from far and near and contributing to Maribor and its importance within Slovene history and its cultural habitus.
