When Zorba the Greek premiered at the Grand Theatre in Łódź in 1990, it received an almost half-hour standing ovation as well as sensational encores by the dancers. The choreography expressing indestructible freedom and liberation and Zorba's fearlessness was particularly relatable to a Poland that had just seen the upheval of a Communist regime. Subsequently, the Zorba ballet became a symbol of Łódź, with its phenomenal music and the 1964 film with Anthony Quinn becoming a strong local favourite. This thrilling spectacle is returning to the Grand Theatre in Łódź and it could be said that not attending this spectacle is missing out on understanding the true spirit of the city!
