Bear with us—this can get a little meta. In short, this exhibition is dedicated to a rather famous photograph considered to be the ubiquitous symbol for the October Uprising of 1917. This historical event, known officially as the Great October Socialist Revolution (AKA Red October), was a key moment of the larger Russian Revolution. It might surprise you to learn, then, that this photograph wasn't actually taken during the October Uprising of 1917, nor was it even taken that same year. In fact, it was taken three years later, at a commissioned recreation in honour of the event and under the supervision of a Russian theatre director. In effect, the photograph depicts a performance of a historic event, and not the event itself. Despite the discrepancy, the photograph was treated as a historical document for years, appearing in textbooks, chronicles, and the press.
