Lake Bled: A Winter Fairy Tale
Nestled in the Julian Alps, Lake Bled is the epitome of winter magic. Snow-capped mountains frame the serene lake, with the iconic Bled Island and its picturesque church sitting at the heart of it all. The surrounding landscape, dusted with snow, creates a postcard-perfect scene. Add the finishing touch of a thousand-year-old cliff-top castle and voila, you’ve stepped into a Disney movie. One could very easily take root for an hour or two just marvelling at this scene alone, but as if this isn’t enough, Bled has lots more to offer.
Walk around the lake: This may not be everyone’s idea of fun, but if you want a good leg stretch then this hour long walk is a great way to enjoy Bled from all angles. If this is too long and chilly for you, then there’s always the option of a horse and carriage ride, which can be very romantic.
Snow activities: Skiers are in for a treat here, Bled is surrounded by some of the country’s top ski resorts including Vogel, Krvavec, Kranjska Gora, and Soriška planina. If conditions are right, you can try a new resort every day! The Pokljuka plateau is also just a short bus ride away and offers winter hikes, snowshoeing, sledding and Nordic walking.
Ice skating: In previous years, skating over to Bled Island was possible and a fun way to enjoy an afternoon, but in recent years and warmer winters, this has not been possible. If you still want to pull on your skates, you can head to the nearby ice rink.
Bled Castle: It certainly makes an impressive backdrop, but even better is a visit to Bled Castle itself where you’ll be treated to even more breathtaking views of the lake. In the castle museum and print works visitors can learn about Bled’s cultural heritage, and explore the wine cellar, restaurant and courtyard.
Pletna boat ride: These traditional Pletna boats ferry guests to and from Bled Island all year round, so what may seem more of a summer activity is a fun winter one too. Once there, you’ll have about 45 minutes to explore before returning.
Wellness and warmth: Warm up in one of the area's luxury spas or hotels, many of which offer thermal pools and saunas. Don’t forget to indulge in a slice of Bled’s famous cream cake (“kremna rezina”).
In December, Lake Bled comes alive with festive markets, featuring local crafts, mulled wine, and holiday treats. The reflecting lights on the lake creates an enchanting holiday atmosphere.
Ljubljana: A Winter Wonderland
Slovenia's capital city, Ljubljana, transforms into a winter wonderland during the colder months. The huge Christmas tree and twinkling lights, and perhaps a dusting of snow, are enough to sweep anyone up into the magic of the season. And once you’re done exploring, numerous riverside cafes with heat lamps and blankets offer cosy comfort.
Christmas activities: Just strolling around and enjoying the lights is an activity in itself. The main stretch of decorations and lights goes from Šentjakobski most (St James Bridge) to Zmajski most (Dragon Bridge), and also lights up the old town and across to Kongresni trg. There are festive markets for gifts and souvenirs, along with mulled wine and roasted chestnut stalls, all of which continue into mid-January.
Ljubljana Castle: The castle offers panoramic views of the city. Take the funicular up or hike through the woods for an adventurous approach. Once at the top, visitors can enjoy the exhibition spaces, museum, Frederik’s gift shop, restaurant and cafes.
A boat trip along the Ljubljanica: A unique way to enjoy the lights and decorations is to drift beneath them on one of the many boat tours. There are plenty of pick-up options where you can jump aboard without advance bookings. Trips last approximately one hour and you’ll be kept toasty warm inside the vessel.
Winter Events: Ljubljana hosts a range of events during Festive December, from live concerts, unique parades, nativity scenes, street performances and children’s activities. There’s pretty much something happening in all of the main squares.
Galleries and Museums: Culture lovers are spoilt for choice in Ljubljana at any time of the year thanks to the abundance of exceedingly high-quality and expertly curated displays and exhibitions. Not only does Slovenia have a rich history to share, the country also has many talented artists, past and present. And, of course, they provide an educational and enjoyable break from the cold.
Tivoli Park: Just a stone’s throw from the bustle of the city is the beautiful Tivoli Park. Covering an area of approximately five square metres, it provides no end of walking paths and hiking trails. There are sculptures and an open-air gallery to enjoy along the way, and up at Tivoli Mansion (home to the International Centre of Graphic Arts) there’s a cafe to warm up in.
The city also boasts a vibrant culinary scene, with cosy cafés and restaurants offering hearty Slovenian dishes to keep you warm. Don’t miss trying “potica,” a traditional walnut roll that’s especially popular during the holidays.
Hard to Compare, Impossible to Choose
While both Lake Bled and Ljubljana shine individually, comparing the two is like comparing apples to oranges. Lake Bled’s allure lies in its natural beauty and serene ambience, offering a peaceful retreat. Ljubljana, on the other hand, captivates with its lively energy, rich history, and cultural offerings. And here's the good news... You don’t have to choose just one! The two destinations are less than an hour apart by car or bus, making it easy to visit both in a single weekend.
