Sat 960 metres above the sea and only accessible via around 600 steps to the south, Buffavento Castle is ideally situated for a watchtower. That is pretty much what it was: the third most important in a chain of defence at the edge of the Kyrenia Mountains. This combination of Byzantine and Frankish architectural flourishes has been largely left in ruins since the 14th century. Still, it retains a historical charm, and the views are fabulous.
